What did I do this week?

Taking the character sketches from last week, I decided to choose the symmetrical demon cats (That I decided to name Chonkers) since my tutors said they were most unique. I took those designs and planned out a storyline I could follow in my animation as well as start creating a turn around for each character. I didn’t change much with the characters as they were already unique ad they were as well as any additions I would have made could have cluttered the design or made it too difficult to animate in the short amount of time I had for this project.

Some parts I was considering changing was the line-art being smooth or textured. Doing both versions of the characters in these types of line-art I decided to do smooth as the textured just didn’t add to the symmetrical and ominous atmosphere these two characters were creating.

The symmetry behind these characters is flipped so fitting the opposites/Duality theme I established last week, they are also quite different in features as the streak of colour next to their eyes are flipped and on the other eye, one is smiling the other is not. I decided on making the smiling cat the female voice as the female voice is deceitful and trying to convince the angry male voice that what they did was right.

The Duality theme inspired my colour scheme choices as I decided on the silhouette colour scheme and the cold colour scheme. The silhouette colour scheme being warm lending itself to oranges and yellows while the cold colour scheme has blues and purples. This coupled with my main theme created the orange and blue complementary colour schemes for my two protagonists.

With these finalised designs I could move onto storyboarding. To help with storyboarding I acted out the expressions and what the characters individually would be doing, I came up with a first draft that ended up being a bit too convoluted and not easy to follow. I decided to create a more clear storyboard instead that included colour to indicate which character was talking as their designs are very similar looking without colour to them.

This storyboard was a lot more clearer and made it easier to envision what type of backgrounds I wanted to include. The last day of the week I was able to start on backgrounds too.

The final shots I chose complimented the theme of Duality with the start being very far away compared to the close ending, the next two scenes with the male voice looking up while the female voice is looking down even though the female is physically lower due to the establishing shot before those close up scenes.

What did I achieve by the end of this week?

I finished character designs, turn arounds as well as an animated video of it just to make sure the turnaround was consistent all around. I also completed two versions of the storyboard and started on the title background at the very start.

Overall critique on my work output this week

Still keeping up with everything as well as achieving more than I thought I would do in just a week, I enjoyed creating a turn around for my character as well as creating a colour scheme for them too.
